Odeo is a web directory and search engine for podcasts and videos from all over the internet. The original version was created by Evan Williams and Noah Glass, Noah was the founder of Audioblog and Evan was the founder of Pyra Labs before this. The company was partly funded by Charles River Ventures, after some time Evan Williams brought out Charles Rivers stake in the company. This created a new company called Obvious Corp and was destined for great things, including designing twitter. Odeo was advertised for sale in February 2007, and soon after Sonic Mountain purchased Odeo for $1 million. A number of acquisitions later made Odeo what it is today. In 2008 Sonic mountain completely redesigned the Odeo site and focused more on the search functions.
Odeo does not itself host any podcasts or videos; it’s a form of search engine that directs people to the podcasts that they are looking for. Rather than having to visit lots of different sites it’s possible to access all of your favorite podcasts from one place. It’s also possible to subscribe to the podcasts so that you are always kept up to date. It also has social networking functions which mean that you can share your choices in podcasts with your friends and contacts.
It’s very easy to use Odeo, and the new design is very easy to use. Finding podcasts that you might be interested in either looking at or subscribing to you can either search using certain keywords, or look at the different podcasts by looking at the different channels. Channels are categories and are an easy way to find out podcasts that you might like to listen to.
You can search for podcasts without actually registering, however for some of the more advanced features you will need to register for an account. This is a very easy process and should only take a couple of minutes to complete. You need to choose a username, enter your email twice, and then enter your password twice. You also have to agree to the terms and conditions, and then enter the captcha quiz to make sure that you’re human. Once you have created your account you will receive a confirmation email which you will need to click the link in.
Using Odeo is completely free although the original creators did hint that they proposed to charge for some features. As the site has changed hands whether or not this will happen is unknown. At the moment and for the foreseeable future the site is completely free to use.
Odeo is perfect for people that like to keep up to date with podcasts from all over the internet but don’t want to have to visit lots of separate sites. This site can manage all of your RSS feeds and keep you up to date without having to visit any other sites.
